"Island Spell" by Wendy Whatmore vividly describes a beautiful island.
The starts her poem saying that she was caught in an island spell. She has given the island a higher place than other islands and lands on earth, by using techniques. The island she describes is an ordinary one. Yet she has other views of it and its objects. Through her poem she tries to evoke the ideas of loving this island within the reader.
"Not for me the far-away places,
Not for me the thirst to roam,"
Here the poetess presents her idea very clearly. That is she has no ambition to leave this island. She is so much attracted to the island because of its beauty. At the same time she presents her sarcastic views on those who try to leave this beautiful island. From these two lines some sort of positive attitude of the beauty of the island is created.
"When her purple dusks are done.
I have drunk the wine of her moonlight,"
Here the poetess makes use of some relevant adjectives to make the island more beautiful. The poetess enjoys the same feeling when she is under the moonlight and when she drinks wine. So this comparison is very effective with the situation.
"I have lain at her breast thro' the years,
I have shared her joys and her laughter,"
Here the poetess has personified her island. She considers her island as a mother and she, a daughter. So this means that what a daughter gets from her mother, here the poetess gains from her mother, the beautiful island. So the love, protection, the beautiful environment, all are given to the poetess by the island. So she admires the beautiful island and creates such an idea within the reader. Through this the poetess tries to aware the public about the value and the beauty of this island.
Besides these, she admires the things in the island. She has given them a higher place than on other lands.
great green water, purple dusk
She had used such words throughout the poem to make the things in the island more and more beautiful. She doesn't sees the water in this island as we see. She calls it great green water. She doesn't see the dusk as an ordinary dusk. She sees something more there. That is why she calls it the purple dusk.
"My wordless island spell."
At the end of the poem she says that she has no word to admire or to express the beauty of the island. So the island is so much beautiful. If so, why do we leave this beautiful, magnificent island. That is what she asks at the end.
All the features described about this beautiful island, in poem are all attractive to me. Because we can't say this is attractive and this is not. The reason is all these beautiful features make this beautiful island.
At length it is clear that the poetess has succeeded in expressing her views about this beautiful island. To achieve her goal she has used visual imageries, auditory imageries and she has made a great idea using the relevant adjectives. So from using all these the poetess tries to evoke the feelings to love and admiring the island within the reader.
